Dear Families,

We are just about halfway done with the school year as this Friday marks the end of first semester. If you haven’t done so already, I encourage you to sit down with your child and ask them to show you their grades and assignments inSynergy StudentVue. Look beyond the letter grades and focus on any missing assignments that your child may have in their binder or failed to turn in. Many of our Tillicum staff accept late work and allow for students to demonstrate knowledge and proficiency beyond identified deadlines. While some class grades may be beyond repair, avoid getting angry and upset. Talk less, ask questions more; questions such as “what do you think you can do differently in second semester for a better outcome?” As far as failure goes, Middle school is one of the best places for students to learn from mistakes and you can help them capitalize on this learning through reflective dialogue. When grades and progress reports are finalized in the next two weeks, I’ll share some additional resources on how to engage in these conversations. For the time being, give yourself some grace for I know that parenting is not for the faint of heart. I’ve got a middle school student in my home too and often need to heed my own advice.
